Text: Matt. 7:24-27
Intro: This passage reveals a “solid and a sinking” foundation
A. You can build your life on “sinking sand” or
you can build on the Solid Rock (the Lord Jesus Christ).
B. The scripture mentions a “Sure” foundation 2
Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having
this seal, The Lord knoweth
them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ
depart
from iniquity.
1. The Psalmist describes
this foundation Psalms 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very
present
help in trouble.”
Psalms 18:1-2 “I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. ~ The LORD
is my rock, and my fortress, and my
deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and
the
horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
C. There yet remains a “shaking” which this world
has never experienced (Haggai 2:6)
“For thus saith the LORD
of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens,
and the earth, and the sea,
and the dry land; ~ And
I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and
I will fill this house with
glory, saith the LORD of
hosts.”
1. All foundations
will be shaken Heb. 12:26-27 “Whose voice then shook the earth:
but
now he hath promised,
saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. ~
And
this word, Yet once more, signifieth the
removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made,
that
those things which cannot be shaken may
remain.”
I. Some wrong Foundations being built Upon Today.
A. One’s own goodness is a wrong foundation.
1. Many think like the rich
man which came to Jesus (Matt.19: 16-22).
a. (Rom.3:12) “There is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
Rom. 3:23
(Isaiah 53:6) “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every
one to his own way; and the LORD hath
laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
B. One’s own thinking is a wrong foundation
(Prov.14:12).
1. Eve’s downfall (Genesis
3:6). “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that
it was pleasant to
the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the
fruit
thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her
husband with her; and he did eat.”
a. Sounded right.
b. Looked right.
c. Felt right.
2. Satan got her to think
for herself.
3. Must listen to God (Prov.
3:5) “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine
own
understanding.”
(Jer. 10:23)
C. One’s own sufficiency is a wrong foundation
(Romans
12:3). “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man
that is among you, not to
think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think
soberly,
according as God
hath dealt to every man
the measure of faith.”
1. (1 Corinthians
10:12).
“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”
2. (Jeremiah 17:7). “Blessed
is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.”
3. Paul’s testimony 2
Corinthians
3:5). “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of
ourselves; but our
sufficiency is of God;”
a. (1 Cor. 15:10; Phil. 4:13)
D. One’s own religious activity is a wrong
foundation
(Psa.51:16-17).
1. (Titus 3:5). “Not by
works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy
he
saved us, by the
washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
2. Some things not for sale.
a. Happiness.
b. Health.
c. Love.
d. Peace of heart.
e. Salvation from sin “Psa. 49:6-8).
II. The Right Foundations.
A. The Word of god (Matt. 24:35).
1. Those who build their
hope and life on God’s Word are as the one who built on the “Rock” that
withstood the storms
of life.
a. In this dark sinful world there is light (Psa. 119:105).
B. The Lord of the Word is the right Foundation
1. He is our Righteousness
(2 Cor.5:21).
2. He is our peace
(Rom.5:1).
3. He is our rock (Psa.
28:1). “Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my Rock; be not silent to
me.”
4. He’s our redeemer (Job
19:25). “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he
shall
stand at the latter day upon
the earth:”
C. The grace of God is a right foundation (Titus
2:11; Eph. 2:8).
D. Faith in the Lord is a right foundation (Heb.
11:6).
1. By faith we can walk
with our lord as Enoch (Gen. 5:22-24; Heb. 11:5).
2. By faith we can build
as Noah (Hebrews 11:7). “By faith Noah, being warned of God of
things
not seen as yet,
moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the
which
he condemned the world, and became heir
of the righteousness which is by faith.”
Conclusion: By faith we can look up at the time of
crossing
over Jordan
A. Paul (2 Tim.4:6-8).
B. Stephen (Acts 7:54-60).
C. Through faith in Christ you can have eternal
life right now (Rom. 10:9-10).
