Text: Galatians 1:6-9
Introduction: In the very early part of the Lord’s new testament
churches there were several counterfeit gospels in
circulation, Luke made mention of this in (Luke 1:1, 3).
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a
declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
… It seemed good to me also, having had perfect
understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee
in order, most excellent Theophilus. In January of this year
(2002) a new version of the NIV (New International Version) was
released
in an attempt to rework the gender reference to
God making Him in the neuter gender instead of masculine gender; which
makes God a great big nothing.
1. There are many that believe we need a new
modern gospel for a new modern society.
2. However, the gospel we need-whether a new time,
old time or anytime must be the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. The true gospel according to the scripture is
the "good news" as preached by the apostle Paul. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4,
For I delivered unto you
first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our
sins
according to the
scriptures; ~ And that he
was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the
scriptures:
4. Though modern man is proud of his progress and
technological advancements, he still desperately needs the good
news
of- God's love.
5. There are three problems men face that only God
can solve.
a. Sin - we may change the
names of sin, but it is still dirty and its consequences will
eventually
find us out (Num. 32:23).
b. Sorrow - Job attested
to- the unvarnished truth that "Man that is born of woman is of few
days
and full of trouble"
(Job 14:1).
a) Despite all that man can do-all his care, skill, learning and
wealth,
yet life is still a weary pilgrimage, and is burdened
with many woes.
c. Death - Though
man has changed the names from coffin to casket, undertaker to
mortician,
graveyard to memorial
park our appointment, with death still stands (Heb. 9:27).
6. In view of these realities man has devised a
"social gospel to help humanity's hurts.
a. But it is no substitute
for God's gospel and the Bible says, "let them be accursed".
7. Notice several things about the "social
gospel."
I. The Root of the Social Gospel has its Origin in Satan.
A. He is a liar and the father of all untruths (John
8:44).
B. Its preachers are the liberal ministers and
seminary
professors who advance its message as wolves in sheep's clothing.
1. Matthew 7:15 Beware of
false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly
they
are ravening wolves.
2. 11. Cor. 11:13-15 Paul
says, they are transformed as ministers of righteousness
3. 1 Timothy 4:1-3
C. We don’t need a boost from below but a
birth from above (John 3:3, 7).
II. The Reasoning of the Social Gospel Comes from the Depraved Minds
of Religious Heretics.
A. They say that the Bible is only inspired
in parts.
1. If the Bible is not the
work of God then it is the work of men
2. The Bible says in (2
Timothy 3:16). All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable
for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness
B. The religious heretics say that God is a God
of love and could send no one to Hell.
1. It is true that God is
a God of love but the Bible also portrays Him as a God of wrath.
Deuteronomy 4:24 For the
LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. Hebrews
12:29
For our God is a consuming fire.
a. “Consuming fire” is one that devours, consumes and destroys.
2. When God's love is
rejected,
it brings forth the consequences of judgment.
3. In reality God sends
no one to Hell but people chose hell because they reject God's love and
His Son who is the only
one who can save.
C. Many folks are teaching today that Jesus Christ
was only a good moral man and His blood has no saving power.
1. Jesus was more than a
man; he was God in the flesh with a sinless nature.
2. He shed His blood in
order that God the Father might be appeased and man might be cleansed
of
his sin.
D. Religious heretics say that sin is only weakness
and not wickedness. That man is a product of his environment and not
responsible for his
deeds; therefore, he is not to be held accountable.
1. The Bible plainly teaches
that man is born a sinner with the natural ability to produce sin,
which
is contrary to the law
of God.
2. The Scripture teaches
that man must reap the consequences of his iniquity (Gal. 6:7).
3. The Scriptures teach
that lost men will give account at the Great White Throne Judgment
(Rev.
20:11-15).
III. The Results of the Social Gospel
A. In the Church - The preaching of the social
gospel
will produce an unregenerate church membership. II Cor. 4:3-4
B. In the Community - the preaching of the social
gospel will produce social disorder (anarchy).
1. When you humanize God,
deitize man, minimize sin, glorify science, glamorize sex and liquorize
society everyone pays
the consequences.
C. The difference between the old gospel and the
new is Heaven and Hell.
1. The new social gospel
offers a barren eternity (Prov. 14:12; Matthew 7: 21-23).
IV. Just because the gospel of Christ is old doesn't mean it has
lost its power. (Rom. 1:16)
A. The sun is old but without it people grope in
darkness.
B. The air is old but without it men gasp and die.
C. The gospel, of Christ is one that lifts up the
fallen, weeps over the erring one and is mighty to save (1 Corinthians
9:16).
For though I preach the
gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea,
woe is unto me, if I preach
not the gospel!
D. It is rooted in Jesus Christ who can rescue,
save and redeem. True preachers of the Gospel believe:
1. The Bible is the inspired
Word of God (2 Tim 3:16-17).
2. God is holy. 1 Peter
1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
3. Christ is Lord because
He died and rose again (Phil. 2:9-11
4. Man is sinful and needs
the new Birth. (John 3:3). Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily,
verily,
I say unto thee,
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Conclusion: John 3:7, Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must
be born again.
