"The Price That Was Paid For Our Souls"

Text: 1 Cor 6: 19-20
Intro: Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, because we are bought and paid for by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.  In these busy commercial days we are always thinking and talking about the value of things.
    A. Cars, houses, clothes, and appliances, "What is the price?" How much is it going to cost?  When we think of the "house
of many mansions" and what God has prepared for them who trust Him, we should think about the price.  When we
look upon the New Jerusalem as John did on the Isle of Patmos, We should say, “What did all this cost Christ?" What
did, it cost Him to prepare that place? May I say it reverently that Jesus paid the price in four installments.
I. The First Installment was His Leaving Glory for Earth.
    A. Christ existed before the world began (John. 1:1-3)
        1. He was the central figure in heaven, the highest Being in glory
    B. His heart went out to a sinful world and He turned from the Glory of Heaven and came down into the world to save us
from our sin (John 17:5) And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee
        before the world was.
    C. He had all power, but He emptied Himself of His glory and His power (Phil 2:5-11).
    D. The Son of God was born in a manger (stable) because there was no room for Him in the inn (Luke 2:7).
        1. One night He spent in the Palace of Glory.
            a. The next He spent in a stable.
        2. One day He wore the purple robe of royalty, as King of Glory.
            a. The next He wore the garb of a poor peasant.
        3. He made one great leap from the highest to the lowest.
    E. He came all the way from the Throne to the manger.
        1. That we might go all the way from the manger of sin to the Throne of Glory.
II. His Second Installment Was His Battle With Satan (Luke 4:1-13).
    A. The Spirit led him into the wilderness where He fasted forty days and ni-ghts.
    B. There Satan met Him with three fierce blasts of temptations v. 7- 12
        1. Lust of the f lesh (Luke 4:3-4). (physical)
    C. Lust of the eyes (Luke 4:5-8). (psychological)
    D. Pride of life (Luke 4:9-12). (spiritual)
    E.  These three are the trinity of evil (1 John 2:15-16).
III. The Third Installment was His Lonely Life on Earth.
    A. He said to a certain scribe one day “foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where
to lay His head. (Luke 9:58).
    B. He was born in a borrowed stable (John 1:3).
    C. He preached from a borrowed boat.
    D. He was buried in a borrowed tomb (Matt 27:57-60).
    E. He could not say my home.
        1. He couldn’t say my wife.
        2. He couldn’t say my children.
    F. These blessings were denied the Son of God (2 Cor. 8:9).
    G.  He came to His own and His own received Him not (John 1:11).
IV. His Fourth Installment was His Suffering for Us.
    A. We see Him suffering in the garden of Gethsemane (Matt 26:36-46).
    B. Jesus, holy, harmless, and separate from sinners, was made the sin offering for us.
    C. There on the cross the sin of humanity was put on Him
    D. We cannot even imagine the horror He felt when our sin was placed upon Him.
    E. It was a horrendous experience for this One who was holy.
    F. Notice He was not asking to escape the cross, but He was praying that God’s will be done.
        1. His friends have deserted Him and gone to sleep.
        2. His enemies are crying out for His blood.
        3. He falls on His face and sobs out the prayer, " O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless
not as I will, but as Thou wilt." (Mt.26:39)
        4. No one ever spent such an hour as Jesus spent in the Garden of Gethsemane
    G. We see Him in a sham trial.
        1. He had no friends to summon nor advocate to speak for Him
        2. They dragged Him froth from His place of prayer (Matt. 26:47).
        3. They buffeted Him and spit their foul saliva in His lovely face.
    H. Then came His cruel death on the cross. The world has seen some awful dark days.
        1. It was a dark day when the flood swept mankind off the earth (Gen 6-8).
        2. It is a dark day when the earth trembles with an earthquake and thousands are killed.
        3. It is a dark day when fire sweeps over an area and leaves death and destruct-ion in its wake
        4. Its a dark day when a volcano covers a city.
        5. Its a dark day when war is declared and men go forth to do wholesale murder.
        6. Its a dark day when thousands are starving because of lack of food.
    I. But the darkest day of man’s history was when Jesus died on the cross.
        1. They took His tired body, bleeding from the fresh wounds that were made by the whip.
        2. They led Him out toward Calvary with a heavy cross upon His bruised back.
        3. They drove great big nails through His hands and feet.
        4. They lifted the cross into the air and with a dull thud it fell into the hole prepared for it.
        5. The tearing of flesh is heard as His body strains against the nails.
    J. At the foot of the cross could be heard the jeers of those who hated Him.
        1. Leaving the glory of heaven was not enough.
        2. His lonely life on earth was not enough
        3. His battle with Satan was not enough,
        4. His agony in the garden was not enough.
        5. The crown of thorns and the beatings were not enough.
    K. He must pay the supreme price and be plunged from life into death, that He might lift us from spiritual death to
         everlasting life
Conclusion: Child of God  "Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price.” We are purchased with the precious blood of Christ. How can we but give Him our all?  Lost friend how can you refuse Jesus as Savior?  He’s waiting now to save you.
